The Shelter Cove community will be practicing, learning, and celebrating fire and safety preparedness on Saturday, April 22nd, through the annual wildfire evacuation drill, Firewise Day, and a special fire preparedness presentation. The evacuation drill will start at around 11:30 am.
The fire department will be activating the community notification sirens and have emergency vehicles driving around with the wildfire evacuation Hi-Lo tone. You can practice and participate by evacuating to the community center where the Shelter Cove Fire Department and the CERT team will be hosting a wildfire preparedness open house at 12:00 pm with booths set up from local fire mitigation groups, state and federal government agencies.
Chief Pape of the Shelter Cove Fire Department will share a report on the exciting grant funding of the Wildfire Resiliency & Community Defense Project and Shelter Cove Firewise. At 1:00 pm, Home Hardening expert Yana Valachovic will speak, tailoring her talk for the circumstances in Shelter Cove. Born and raised in southern Humboldt, Valachovic is a renowned speaker, Forest Advisor for the UC Cooperative Extension in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties, and a member of the Humboldt County Fire Safe Council. Please join the Shelter Cove Fire Department, RID#1 and SC CERT by participating in the evacuation drill, Firewise Day, and the Fire Preparedness Workshop.
