Southern Humboldt lies within a rural mountainous region known for its pristine natural environment. It is spotted with groves of old growth redwoods that hold many rare plants and animals. An outdoorsman's paradise, there are parks and reserves through out the area including Richardson Grove, Benbow Lake, Humboldt Redwoods, and Sinkyone Wilderness State Parks, and the King Range. These areas offer hiking, sightseeing, swimming, fishing, and any outdoor activity imaginable. The climate is considered rather like that of a temperate rainforest with summer temperatures averaging between 80-90° but often hitting 100 and winters holding heavy rains with occasional snow and frost. Southern Humboldt is an extended community, made up of many small towns including Garberville, Redway, Benbow, Alderpoint, Briceland, Whitethorn, Shelter Cove, and the towns along the Avenue of the Giants, Phillipsville, Miranda, Myers Flat, Weott, and Redcrest. While the central shopping area is Garberville, each community offers unique shopping and housing opportunities.
